How to move a recurring gift to the correct supporter record
Last updated: September 23, 2026
Once a recurring gift has processed payments, it cannot be directly moved to a different supporter in WeGive or Salesforce. Salesforce also blocks changing the owner of a Recurring Donation once it has a Closed Won Opportunity attached. However, the donor does not need to start over. Follow the steps below to correct the record.
Steps to reassign a recurring gift to the correct supporter
Pause the current recurring gift from the WeGive dashboard so no additional payments are processed on the wrong household.
Move past transactions to the correct supporter. Open each transaction tied to the recurring gift and update the Supporter field to the correct person. This transfers the giving history to the right record.
Transfer the payment method to the correct supporter. If the payment method (card or bank account) is saved under the wrong supporter, you have two options:
If the payment method is correct but associated with the wrong supporter, add the login linked to that payment method to the new supporter's record. This will bring the payment method over. Then remove the login and payment method from the old record.
If the payment method is not transferable this way, the donor may need to add their payment method again on the correct supporter's record.
Create a new recurring gift on the correct supporter using the same amount, frequency, fund, and payment method. Set the next donation date to match the original schedule to avoid any gap or double charge. This new recurring gift will sync to Salesforce as a new Recurring Donation under the correct household.
When creating the new recurring gift, make sure the next donation date aligns with the original schedule so the donor is neither charged twice nor skips a payment cycle.
