How to Move a Transaction to Another Supporter
Last updated: September 10, 2026
Overview
Sometimes a gift lands on the wrong supporter record. A donor may check out as a guest, use a second email address, or an admin may select the wrong name when entering a gift manually. In WeGive you can move an individual transaction to a different supporter directly from the Edit Payment screen.
Reassigning a transaction changes which supporter receives credit for the gift, including on their giving history and their year end tax statement, so confirm you have the correct destination record before you save.
Before You Start
Confirm both supporter records. Supporter search results display the supporter ID and email address, which helps when two records share a name.
Decide whether to reassign or merge. If the two records are the same person or organization entered twice, merging the duplicate is usually the better fix because it moves the full history in one action, including recurring plans. Reassign a single transaction only when the two supporters are genuinely different people and one gift was credited to the wrong one.
Check whether the transaction belongs to a recurring plan. If it does, read the recurring plan section below first. Moving one payment does not change where future payments land.
Steps
1. Open the transaction
Go to Payments, locate the transaction, and open it. Select Edit to open the Edit Payment screen.
2. Change the Supporter field
In the Supporter field, clear the current supporter and search for the correct one by name or email address. Each result in the dropdown shows the supporter ID and email address. Confirm you are choosing the right record before you select it, especially when several supporters have similar names.
3. Review the designation and fund allocations
Scroll to Primary designation and the Fund Allocations section and confirm both are still correct. These save together with the payment, so review them on this same screen rather than in a separate edit.
4. Check the tax setting
Visible in tax documents controls whether the gift appears on tax statements. Leave it as it is unless you are intentionally changing how the gift is treated, and confirm it still shows the value you expect after saving.
5. Save your changes
Select Review changes in the top right, review the summary, and save. WeGive asks you to confirm the change because it affects which supporter receives tax credit for the donation.
6. Verify on the new supporter record
Open the destination supporter and confirm the transaction now appears in their giving history.
Note: Giving totals are recalculated in the background, so the new supporter's lifetime giving may take a few minutes to update.
If the Transaction Belongs to a Recurring Plan
Reassigning a payment that came from a recurring plan moves only that one payment.
Other past payments on the plan keep their original supporter. Move them one at a time if the full history needs to change.
Future payments are still credited to the plan's supporter. Each new charge takes its supporter from the plan itself, not from the previous payment.
The supporter on a recurring plan cannot be changed. The Edit Recurring Plan screen has no Supporter field, and the payment method on the plan belongs to the original supporter.
To move an ongoing recurring gift to a different supporter, cancel the plan and recreate it on the correct record. See How to Transfer a Recurring Plan Between Supporters (Salesforce NPSP).
Important Considerations
Confirm the destination record before saving. Reassigning a transaction changes who receives tax credit for the gift.
Documents that were already sent do not update. If a receipt or statement went out to the original supporter, plan to send a corrected version if the organization needs one.
Moving a single payment is historical cleanup. If gifts keep landing on the wrong supporter, address the underlying cause, such as a duplicate record or a recurring plan on the wrong supporter.
Consider merging when the records are the same person. Merging is faster and more complete than reassigning transactions one at a time, and it is the only option that moves recurring plans.
