How to Bulk Tag Supporters Using a CSV Import
Last updated: July 25, 2026
If you have a list of supporters you want to tag all at once, such as a segment you exported for a campaign or a list a partner sent you, you can add a tag to all of them in one pass using WeGive's import tool. This works for both individual supporters and companies.
Before you start
You'll need a CSV file with a column containing a unique identifier for each supporter. WeGive can match rows using several identifiers, including WeGive ID, Email, a custom reference field, or another CRM's unique ID (Salesforce, NPC, HubSpot, Neon, Virtuous, and PlanningCenter are all supported).
We recommend using WeGive ID rather than Email whenever possible. If any of your supporters share an email address, matching by email can tag the wrong record.
Step 1: Start a new import
From anywhere in WeGive, open the search bar and type "import."
Select Create Import.
Step 2: Choose the Tag action
WeGive offers four import actions, each suited to a different task:
Action | What it does |
Insert | Creates new records from CSV rows |
Update | Updates existing records matched by a primary identifier |
Tag | Attaches tags to existing supporters matched by a primary identifier |
Token Transfer | Transfers recurring plans from a legacy processor by attaching payment methods |
Under Select Action, choose Tag.
Under Select Object, choose the supporter type you're tagging, Donor - Individual or Donor - Company.
Click Continue.
Step 3: Upload and map your CSV
Click Choose file and select your CSV.
In the mapping table, find your identifier column and set its Destination Field to match, for example WeGive ID, Email, or Custom ID.
Under Primary Identifier, select the same field. This tells WeGive to match each row to an existing supporter rather than creating a new one.
Click Continue.
Step 4: Confirm and run the import
Review the Import Summary, which shows your file name, the primary identifier, and the mapping.
Click Execute Import.
The import starts as Pending and moves to Completed once WeGive finishes processing your rows. Click Refresh to check on progress.
Step 5: Add the tag to your imported supporters
Running the import matches your CSV rows to existing supporters, but the tag itself is applied in the Supporters list.
From the completed import, go to All Supporters. It will already be filtered to the supporters from your import.
Select the checkbox at the top of the list, then choose Select all.
Click the tag icon to open Select tags to add.
Type your tag name. If it already exists, choose it from the list; if not, select Create "[tag name]".
Decide whether to leave Trigger engagements for this action on. When it's on, adding the tag can kick off any journeys or automated messages tied to that tag. Turn it off if you just want the tag applied quietly.
Click Add Tags.
Your supporters are now tagged and ready to use in filters, exports, or journeys.
