How to Impersonate a Supporter to Access Their Supporter Record

Last updated: June 24, 2026

Sometimes you need to see exactly what a supporter sees in their donor portal — to troubleshoot a display issue, confirm what content is visible to them, or verify their experience. WeGive lets you do this by creating a login for yourself on their supporter record and signing into their portal directly.

This guide walks through how to set that up, view the portal, and remove your access when you're done.

Important: You can view the supporter's portal, but you cannot access their payment method. Payment details remain protected and are never exposed through this process.

Step 1: Add a login to the supporter record

  1. Open the supporter's record in WeGive.

  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top right of the record.

  3. Select Add login.

  4. In the Add Login window, enter your name and an email address using a +donorname variation of your own email. For example, if your email is help@wegive.com and the supporter is "John Smith", use:

    help+johnsmith@wegive.com

This routes all portal emails to your normal inbox while creating a distinct login tied to this supporter.

  5. Add a phone number if prompted, then click Save.

The + variation matters: it gives you a unique login that you control and can easily identify and remove later, without affecting the supporter's own login.

Step 2: Get the portal sign-in link

  1. Go to Portal Settings.

  2. On the Set Up tab, find Default Sign In URL at the top.

  3. Click it to copy the link to your clipboard (you'll see a "Default Sign In URL copied to clipboard" confirmation).

Step 3: Log in to the portal

  1. Open the copied portal sign-in link in your browser.

  2. On the Login to your profile screen, enter the +donorname email you just created (e.g., help+johnsmith@wegive.com).

  3. Click Login to your account and complete the sign-in.

You're now viewing the supporter's portal exactly as they would see it — their lifetime impact, giving history, recurring giving, pledges, fundraisers, impact stories, and recent activity.

Step 4: View the portal

Browse the portal as needed to confirm what the supporter sees. Again, note that the payment method is not accessible through impersonation — everything else in their portal view is.

Step 5: Remove your access when finished

Once you're done, remove the login you created so it doesn't linger on the supporter's record.

  1. From the supporter record, go to the Portal tab and scroll to the Logins section (or open All Donor Logins and filter by the donor).

  2. Find the login with your +donorname email.

  3. Select it using the checkbox.

  4. Click Archive to remove the access.

Confirm the supporter's own original login (e.g., their real email) remains untouched — you only want to remove the temporary login you added.
