Multi-Designation Allocation Guide

The Multi-Designation Allocation feature allows donors to split a single gift across multiple funds during checkout, creating a more flexible and personalized giving experience.

How to Enable It

This feature is not enabled by default due to ongoing work to support accurate historical data tracking.

To use multi-designation allocations:

  1. Submit a request to the WeGive team.

  2. If approved, the feature will be manually enabled by the developers.

  3. Once enabled, go to the Designations tab in your dashboard.

  4. Select the designation settings.

  5. Toggle on “Allow supporters to select multiple designations.”

Once this is on, any checkout using these designations will support multiple selections. If a donor only chooses one designation, the checkout will appear and function as a standard single-designation experience.

Donor Experience

  1. Designation Selection:
Donors will see a list of available designations during checkout. They can select one or multiple.

  2. Amount Entry:
After selecting designations, they must enter the total amount they want to donate.

  3. Allocation Step:

    • Donors are taken to a new “Allocations” step.

    • The system will auto-allocate the total amount evenly across selected designations.

    • Donors can manually adjust the amounts if needed.

    • Example: $10.00 is auto-allocated as:

      • General Fund: $33.34

      • Building Fund: $33.33

      • Outreach Fun: $33.33

    • They then click Confirm Allocation to proceed.

Data & Tracking

After the donation is made:

  • In the Settings & History tab, you’ll see a new variable:
    designation_allocation_name
This contains a comma-separated list of designations and amounts (e.g., General Fund: $33.34, Building Fund: $33.33, Outreach Fund: $33.33).

Dashboard Tools

  • View Allocations:
In the donor portal, click into a gift and select the “Allocations” dropdown.

  • Manual Allocation:
You can manually create or edit allocation entries when:

    • Recording an offline donation

    • Charging a donor directly through the dashboard

Allocations are found in a section at the bottom of the donation or payment editing screen.
