Redirects & Vanity URLs Guide

Redirects in WeGive allow you to create custom, memorable URLs (vanity URLs) that forward supporters to a longer, original URL for a Checkout, Pledge, Form, Event, or Fundraiser. This feature is helpful for marketing, print materials, and simplifying URLs for easy access.

What Is a Redirect?

A redirect creates a simple URL path (e.g., /donate) that forwards to a longer, system-generated URL (e.g., /checkout_123?campaign=456&designation=789). This makes it easier to share URLs online or in printed materials without exposing the full link.

How to Access the Redirects Table

  1. Go to the Data tab in your WeGive dashboard.

  2. Click on Redirects to open the Redirects Table.

In this table, you’ll see:

Column

Description

ID

Unique identifier for the redirect

Redirect From

The short (vanity) path you’ve created

Redirect To

The full original URL that this path redirects to

Example Use Case

If your Checkout URL is:

https://app.wegive.com/your-org/checkout/googleplay?campaign=519&singlePage=true

You might want to create a vanity URL like:

https://app.wegive.com/your-org/donate

This shorter path is easier to remember and share. Creating a redirect maps the /your-org/donate path to the longer checkout URL.

Creating a Redirect from the Redirects Table

  1. In the Redirects Table, click the “+” button.

  2. Redirect From: Enter the shortened path (e.g., your-org/donate)

    • This should include your organization’s slug or subdomain (e.g., givelist-foundation/donate).

  3. Redirect To: The full original URL (e.g., the full checkout or event URL).

  4. Click Save.

Once created, visiting the vanity URL will take users directly to the original destination.

Creating Redirects from an Element

You can also create redirects directly from Checkouts, Pledges, or other elements:

  1. Open the desired element in your dashboard (e.g., a Checkout or Pledge).

  2. Click the Implement button.

  3. Select Create Vanity URL.

  4. The Redirect To field will be prefilled with the element’s full URL.

  5. Enter your custom Redirect From path (e.g., your-org/gala2025).

  6. Save your redirect.

This method is faster when working directly from an element you're configuring.

Requirements for Redirect Paths

  • Your Redirect From path must include your organization's subdomain or slug (e.g., nonprofit-foundation/).

  • You can then add any path you'd like (e.g., /donate, /fundraiser23, etc.).

  • Avoid using spaces or special characters.

Best Practices

  • Use vanity URLs in printed materials, flyers, or verbal announcements.

  • Keep paths short, descriptive, and easy to remember.

  • Update or archive old redirects if they are no longer in use.

  • Test your redirect after saving to ensure it forwards correctly.
