Understanding the Fee Pass Works: Covering Fees to Maximize Your Donation

Why are the fees shown on my Donor Portal Checkout higher than the actual fee my organization is being charged?

Understanding Fees in the Donor Portal

When making a donation through the WeGive Donor Portal Checkout, you may notice an option to cover fees during the checkout process. It's important to understand that the fee shown as a "fee cover" in the Donor Portal Checkout isn’t necessarily the fee that WeGive or your organization is being charged.

Fee Pass vs. Fee Cover

We refer to this as a fee pass rather than just a fee cover. This is because the fee you see is the amount you would need to add to your donation to ensure that the organization receives the exact amount you enter at checkout.

For example:

  • If you donate $10 and choose to cover the fee, the fee is added on top of your donation. However, due to the way processing fees are calculated, the organization will still receive slightly less than $10, even with the fee cover.
  • In this case, the fee pass ensures the organization receives the full $10 after fees.

Why is the Fee Higher?

The reason the fee may appear higher is that your organization’s processing agreement may include additional fees. For instance, your organization's processing fees might include a platform fee, which is bundled into the total fee calculation.

This helps cover the costs associated with processing payments and platform use, ensuring that your full donation reaches the organization while accounting for these additional fees.
